Running Shoes are generally divided into five basic types depending on your foot type and the performance that you need. They are the following:
- Stability – This shoe type is specifically suitable for those with neutral feet. Stability Shoes usually have a straight or semi-curved last, or shoe shape. This shoe type may also have some Motion Control which also makes it ideal for mild overpronators.
- Motion Control – Of all the shoe types listed here, Motion Control Shoes are the heaviest, most rigid, most durable and - you probably guessed that already - the most expensive. Their straight last design is ideal for overpronators as it provides more stability and support for the inner foot.
- Cushioned – Cushioned Shoes provide the most flexibility among the different shoe types in this list. This shoe type is specifically designed for supinators or those whose ankles are more prone to being sprained. Cushioned shoes are usually found in curved or semi-curved last designs.
- Lightweight – Lightweight Shoes are designed for speed making them ideal for sprinters or for fast-paced training. They are ideal for runners with neutral feet. As this type does not come with a Motion Control variety, this is not fit for overpronators or those with flat feet.
- Trail – With its deep-lugged soles, this type is specifically designed for running on rough courses. Aside from the added traction, it has a toe bumper for added protection and an upper made of waterproof materials for bad weather conditions.
